ELEMENTAL - COMMISSIONED BY THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNAECOLOGISTS
Elemental was commissioned in 2016 by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London and was finally inaugurated in their premises in June 2017.
I rarely show my work in the making, I somehow feel that the magic is altered if I do… however, when I looked back at the video created by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for the unveiling, I felt moved to see how this piece had evolved and grown over its production period.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for selecting my design among hundreds of candidates and for trusting me all the way during the production phase; they gave me complete freedom and that is priceless for an artist!
Special thanks to Megan McLaren who liaised with me with so much grace throughout the project.
I would also like to thank Arianna Puntin and Doina Avram for working tirelessly with me on this project… We finished bang on time to meet the RCOG’s inauguration evening event.
This is a tale from mind to hands…
THE CONCEPT
The idea of the circle kept coming back to my mind, as it symbolises to me the harmonious wholeness which gives life to everything.
It represents Life at a microscopic scale with the atom, at the human scale with the embryo and at the macroscopic scale with the planets and the Sun. The circle is everywhere and in everything and exists since the beginning of time.
In my opinion, no other shape could have better represented the concept of birth and life.
This design represents the arrival of life propelled out before our eyes using two main references: the Big Bang (source of all life) and the pregnancy wheel (used extensively throughout the world by obstetricians and gynaecologists).
